In the village of Strane, the village with the highest altitude in the Municipality of Postojna which is located at the foothills of Nanos, you can admire the thickest and, according to folk lore, also the oldest yew tree in Slovenia. Considering the circumference of its trunk, foresters believe the tree could be between 500 and 600 years old. According to folk tradition, however, the tree was planted in 350 AD. This tree higher than 11 metres, with a circumference of 385 centimetres, is located in front of the village church. According to a local legend, Saints Cyril and Methodius preached in the shade of this yew tree when crossing the Balkans on their way to Rome.
